Lawton Families,
We had another busy week around Lawton. Our 1st graders were learning about story elements through The Three Little Pigs, our 5th graders were applying their nonfiction reading skills to excerpts from the U.S. Constitution, and we had a great turnout at our 3rd–5th Grade Curriculum Night.
Our PTA fundraiser is kicking off, and somewhere along the way I agreed to kiss a miniature horse if we reach $25,000. I don’t know if they bite. I don’t know what their breath smells like. I’m honestly not sure I want answers to any of these questions. So, support our PTA generously, but maybe $24,998 generously.
On a more serious note, one of our schoolwide focuses this year is productive struggle. We want our students to know it is okay when learning is difficult. In fact, sticking with a challenge, trying another strategy, and learning from mistakes instead of giving up is how we grow as learners and become better problem solvers.
You can reinforce this at home too. When your child says,“I can’t do this,” don’t be too quick to rescue them. Ask what they have already tried. Ask what they could try next. Give them permission to make a mistake and try again. We want our kids to learn that struggling with something doesn’t mean they can’t do it. It just means they haven’t figured it out yet.
If you are heading to the Silent Disco Saturday, have a great time! Enjoy the weekend, Lawton!
